6. You’re stupid
Narcissists think they are more intelligent and better than everyone else. They may insult your intelligence, education, or skills and make fun of your mistakes or opinions. They want to make you feel dumb and incompetent, so you rely on them for guidance and validation.
How to respond:
Don’t let them intimidate you. You have the right to be confident and proud of your abilities and achievements. You can say something like, “I’m not stupid. I’m smart. You’re being arrogant and condescending, and I won’t listen to you.”
7. You’re lucky to have me
Narcissists have a grandiose sense of self and think they are superior and desirable. They may tell you that you’re lucky to have them, that no one else would want you, or that you owe them for being with you. They want to make you feel grateful and indebted, so you don’t leave them or challenge them.
How to respond:
Don’t let them manipulate you. You have the right to be valued and respected in a relationship. You can say something like, “I’m not lucky to have you. I’m worthy of love. You’re being narcissistic and abusive, and I don’t need you.”
