12 Demeaning Things Narcissists Say

10. You’re too much

Narcissists have a low tolerance for anything that challenges or threatens their ego. They may tell you that you’re too much, that you’re too emotional, too needy, too demanding, or too complex. They want to make you feel ashamed and unwelcome, so you suppress your feelings and needs.

How to respond:

Don’t let them silence you. You have the right to express yourself and ask for what you want. You can say something like, “I’m not too much, I’m enough. You’re being cold and dismissive, and I won’t settle for less.”

11. You don’t love me

Narcissists crave love and admiration, but they don’t know how to give or receive it. They may tell you that you don’t love them, that you don’t care about them, or that you don’t appreciate them. They want to make you feel guilty and obligated so you prove your love and devotion to them.

How to respond:

Don’t let them guilt-trip you. You have the right to love and be loved healthily and respectfully. You can say something like, “I do love you, but I don’t like how you treat me. You’re being needy and manipulative, and I won’t tolerate it.”
